Minecraft Forge 1.17.1 → 1.8.9: The API that takes Minecraft Unlimited

Minecraft Forge 1.17.1 → 1.8.9 is an essential modding API for customizing Minecraft

Minecraft Forge is a Minecraft Modding API (Application Programming Interface) that makes it easy to create Minecraft mods and also make Minecraft mods compatible with each other. It forms the basis of most existing Minecraft mods. Developers can customize Minecraft based on it. With Minecraft Forge, Minecraft is unlimited! To that end, those who develop Forge have always updated versions to make sure your mod is compatible with the latest update from Mojang.

Minecraft Forge 1.17.1

Minecraft Forge simplifies the installation of mods by managing them in one place. It also makes sure that all your mods work together, since they’re designed for Minecraft’s server-side API and not against it like some other managers do.

MCPatcher is another great mod manager if you prefer playing on PC instead but know about how much easier this process can be when using something like forge Profile photo credit goes to Rebrn user: ericsmith9000.

How to install Minecraft Forge

Step 1. Download the Installer version compatible with your system and setup. If you’re using Windows, feel free to download the Windows Installer. For Mac/Linux, download the regular Installer.

Step 2. Run the installer program and select “Install Client.” The files will automatically be installed to the default install directory (.minecraft folder).

Optional: You can change the install directory for the Minecraft Forge files by clicking the “…” button next to the box with the directory address. If you want easy access to the files, we recommend creating a temporary folder on your Desktop and setting that as the install directory.

Notice:

If you have other versions of Forge installed, make sure you have NO existing mods in the mods folder. Otherwise, Forge won’t load.

Step 3. Hit OK. All libraries and Forge files will immediately begin downloading into the specified folder.

Wait until all files have been downloaded before moving on to Step 5. This should only take a minute or two.

Step 4. Exit your Minecraft Launcher, and then start it again. Go back to Launch Options and click on Add New.

Step 5. Click on the Version drop-down menu and scroll all the way to the bottom.

You should see something along the lines of “release 1.12.2” (or whatever version you downloaded and are using) and the name forge after it. Select it.

Again, change the Resolution values as you see fit and the RAM allocation (refer to Preparing for Installation section). Hit the Save button.

Choose that option and hit Play.

Step 6. Go back to the News screen and click the up arrow next to the Play button. You should see the option to play the version with “forge” in the name.

Step 7. When the Minecraft landing screen opens, check the lower-left corner. You should see the line “Powered by Forge” and then whatever version you chose.

You will also have an option for Mods. This will tell you Minecraft Forge has been successfully installed.

Well done!

How to add a mod to Minecraft

Once you’ve found one that’s appealing, save the file to your newly-created Forge mods folder. The address on your PC will be: C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\mods

On a Mac, it’ll be: On mac open finder, hold down ALT and click Go then Library in the top menu bar. Open the folder Application Support and look for Minecraft. Place the mod you have just downloaded (.jar file) into the Mods folder. When you launch Minecraft and click the mods button you should now see the mod is installed.

[your computer’s name] > Macintosh HD > Users > [your username] > Library > Application Support > minecraft > mods

In place of [your username], insert the name of the account you’re using on your computer.

Once you’ve done that, you can check that the mod is enabled by clicking the “Mods” tab on the “Minecraft” main menu (see above), then confirming that the mod is listed in the left column beneath the “Minecraft” version you’re running.
