Even though there have been quite negative reviews on the latest iPhone lineup which consists of the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple has certainly made great efforts to improve their flagships. Among those improvements, the repairability of the regular iPhone 14 and its plus size, iPhone 14 Plus, has increased impressively. The reason lies within the new phones’ innovative designs which help engineers a lot while trying to fix something internally. Apple devices are generally known to be hard to repair especially with their designs. You might hardly find screws or bolts and it requires special tools, also skills, to open them up. For example, AirPods are significantly known as one of the most unfixable gears from this company. Otherwise, MacBook models are a little easier to repair.
In general, we are aware that the iPhone 14 contains only a few upgrades, compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 13. At the first glance, one might hardly tell which one is the iPhone 13 and which one is the other. In fact, the internal design of the iPhone 14 has been adjusted greatly so that the phone is easier to be fixed when there is some issue with its hardware.
Thanks to a removable back glass panel which is equipped on both the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus, the two phones might be opened from both sides, front and back. Apple actually stopped using this design after the release of the iPhone 4S. From the launch of the iPhone 5 in 2012, the tech giant has been sticking to the designs that allow iPhones to be opened only from the front. It means that whether the broken part is anywhere within the phone, the display screen must be taken out. This is obviously inconvenient and more challenging to fix the phone.
Apple’s senior director of iPhone product design Richard Dinh was excited to share about these changes as he spoke to The Sydney Morning Herald. A featured central aluminum frame “helps to dissipate more heat across the entire surface more consistently”. Apparently, it seems like Apple has not done much changes to the next generation of iPhone. However, the entire internal design has been innovated so that the new phones are easier to repair. He added “We don’t always follow a recipe, as much as maybe our customers would like to predict what we’re going to go do next, but it always starts with the customer experience”.
